The Anti-Islamophobia Working Group marks Islamophobia Awareness Month at Westminster City Council!

On the 20th November, the Anti-Islamophobia Working Group (AIWG) was honoured to host an event at the iconic Wesminster City Council, to mark Islamophobia Awareness Month.

The evening boasted an incredible line-up of guests including: AIWG member, Show Racism the Red Card; Top Boy Actor, Alessandro Babalola; Model and Humanitarian, Mariah Idrissi; and one of Britain’s youngest Imam’s, Sabah Ahmedi, as well as the Co-Chairs of the Council’s multi-faith network

The event aimed to:

1. Raise awareness of the sobering reality of Islamophobia we are witnessing in the UK today (a 600% increase in Islamophobic hate-crime, according to ITV News, 9 Nov)

2. Recognise the importance of effective allyship

3. Celebrate British Muslim excellence and achievement

4. And through the above, we can take meaningful steps to tackle this insidious hatred which has such an impact on communities at large

In his speech, Babalola spoke of the importance of "humans unifying together to tackle and eradicate hatred, prejudice, bigotry and division in society". Paul Hill, regional manager for 'Show Racism the Red Card' additionally discussed the importance of "being an ally and challenging Islamophobia not only in classrooms, but out in the streets, out in the playgrounds" and anywhere that "Islamophobia presents itself".

Below you can check out a brand new video from the Anti-Islamophobia Working Group highlighting our joint event with Westminster City Council, including our star studded lineup of guests.

Thank you to all the wonderful people, speakers, volunteers and supporters who came out and expressed solidarity!
