The AIWG Launches A Thematic Report: ‘Strategies for Eradicating Islamophobia in the UK’.

The Anti-Islamophobia Working Group (AIWG) published its much anticipated report on 6th February at the Al-Manaar Centre in London.

Not only is the Al Manaar Centre a working group member, but it also serves as a beautifully inspiring setting for the group’s work. The Centre is known and famous for becoming a central source of emergency support immediately following the tragic Grenfell tower fire. Their generosity of spirit embodies Islamic teachings and values.

The event included a line up of speakers, all of whom embody British Muslim excellence:

  • AIWG Founder and Director Anisa Mahmood

  • CEO of Al Manaar Abdurahman Sayed

  • UK Director of Human Rights Watch Yasmine Ahmed

  • Gvt Adviser Imam Asim Hafiz OBE

  • Cllr Zainab Asunramu

  • Al Manaar Trustee Kasim Ali

  • GB Paralympian Azeem Amir

This report is honest, informative and above all, a call to action. At its core it seeks to bring a greater understanding, empathy, and connectedness to the wider society of British Muslim communities living here in the UK. It looks at how Islamophobia manifests itself and through its six inter-related Pillars, the report identifies 18 strategic goals that should be pursued to counter and eradicate Islamophobia.

These include measures related to formal and informal education, media literacy and public discourse, cross-community solidarity and allyship, legislative measures, government engagement both with UK civil society and the international community, and monitoring and documentation.

We hope all members of society engage and heed our timely recommendations.
