The AIWG delivers a petition to Downing Street, calling for anti-Islamophobia action

Marking the beginning of Islamophobia Awareness Month, the Anti-Islamophobia Working Group delivered a petition to the Prime Minister at Downing Street, expressing our profound concern regarding the alarming rise of Islamophobia in British society, underscording a pressing need for government intervention.

The previous month saw a 430% rise in reports of Islamophobic hatred (Tell MAMA, 2023), following Hama's attacks on October 7th and the ongoing painful repurcussions for Palestinians and Israelis.

We called on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to protect and safeguard the British Muslim community from the scourge of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred. With a sixfold increase in Islamophobia, urgent action is desperately required and needed.

The delegation included: Show Racism the Red Card, the Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre, the Aziz Foundation, the former UN Special Rapporteur on religious freedom, Ahmed Shaheed, and AIWG founder and director, Anisa Mahmood.

AIWG founder Anisa Mahmood said: ‘With a dramatic surge in Islamophobic incidents since the conflict, it’s urgent now more than ever for the Prime Minister to engage with this issue.

'That’s why we’re calling on him to meet with the working group so we can create meaningful change and tackle Islamophobia.”

‘There’s no better time to do this than Islamophobia Awareness Month.’
